MURA Breakfast Meeting, May 6, 2025

Marc Johnson, University of Missouri
Flush with Data: Using Wastewater Surveillance as a Comprehensive and Unbiased Readout of Community Health

Marc is Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Mizzou, and an Investigator at the Christopher S. Bond Life Sciences Center. He joined MU in 2005 after completing a Ph.D. at Oregon State and postdoctoral work at Cornell. He was happily studying how viruses assemble when the earth stood still in 2020, as COVID-19 swept the world. Laboratories everywhere shut down, but Marc switched to a new field, using the tools of molecular biology on wastewater samples to characterize new and old strains of the COVID virus. Environmental samples can predict outbreaks, monitor community susceptibility to disease, and can do so without invading people’s privacy.

At the April 2024 Board meeting, the Board approved making the Breakfast Zoom webinar and the live recording of the event available for FREE to members; however preregistration is required.

Pre-registration and payment (via PayPal Account, Venmo bank transfer) for the breakfast must be received by Monday, April 21, 2025. If you have paid for the in-person breakfast and find that you are unable to attend, you may watch the webinar live via the Zoom link or later via the Zoom video recording link. You must request access to the live link by contacting Mary Leuci no later than the day prior to the breakfast.
